About this piece

2019 – Edenbridge, Kent – UK

Early Spring and April showers at Hever Castle & Gardens. The Castle standing behind the ornamental Fountain Garden.
Tutor Garden

Alongside the Yew Maze lies the Tudor Garden, a series of small, sheltered gardens with neatly clipped hedges. These simple gardens were laid out as they might have been in the time of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. One is planted in the style of a Tudor Herb Garden with a variety of English herbs. The paved Fountain Garden contains a profusion of Ballerina shrub roses around a tiled fountain making it the perfect place to sit and relax. In the adjoining Chess Garden, with its chess pieces cut from golden yew, stands an astrolabe dating from the reign of Queen Anne.

Hever Castle

Spanning more than 700 years, the history of Hever Castle is rich and varied. The original medieval defensive castle, with its gatehouse and walled bailey, was built in 1270. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was the home of one of the most powerful families in the country, the Boleyns, who added the Tudor dwelling within the walls.
