About this piece

2020 – Whitstable – UK

“In all our searching, the only thing we’ve found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other.”

Carl Sagan

National Human Story

Whitstable, Kent UK – Lunchtime 1st May 2020 during Coronavirus Lockdown. This busy one-way system that runs through this seaside town would normally be bumper to bumper with traffic and people falling off its narrow pavements. The Shop, Restaurants and Pubs that make Harbour Street a destination where Life gathers and interacts now have their doors closed. On this day with a tripod in the middle of the road I took my time to get the shot without fear of being run down and not a person in sight!

Here the junction of Harbour Street and Sea Street stands a prominent castellated wedge of a building that nods to the architectural style seen a the near by Whitstable Castle. The two toned building frontage creates a lovely contrast mirror image in Black & White between the tones of the sky and road. The wet surfaces and incoming thunder clouds accentuated the oppressiveness of the national human story, which is lockdown and social distancing in local communities.

Oyster will remain in their beds

Whitstable is a traditional seaside town on the North Kent coast in the South-Eastern of England. It is famous for its ‘Native Oysters’ which have been collected from beds beyond the low water mark since Roman times and still farmed today. This is celebrated at the annual Oyster Festival which takes place during the summer when the town is a popular tourist destination. In 2020 I fear that this event will not be taking place and the Oyster will remain in their beds!

Covid19 Lockdown Collection

During lockdown I have been living in Whitstable; photographs taken have been during my local daily exercise walk with two cameras strapped over shoulders looking to capture a moment from these strange times. This photograph is part of the Covid19 Lockdown Collection, see the others images that make up this interesting documentary collection.
